Double Eagles were first produced at the time of the California Gold Rush in 1849.
There still exist 2 Gold Proof Double Eagles from that time – one is in the Smithsonian Institute and the other is in private hands.
Full production of the Double Eagle Coin started in 1850 and went on until 1933.
The most famous of the Double Eagles are the St Gaudens designs from 1907 to 1933.
These are very pretty coins indeed and are generally judged to be the best coin deisn of the 20th Century.
A Liberty Coronet design was made between 1849 and 1907 and these are slightly less valuable than the St Gaudens design coins.
The original St Gaudens design proved difficult to mint and only 12,367 were struck .These fetch between $10,000 and half a million dollars each depending on condition.
Double eagles were minted until 1933, although few of the very last years' coinages were made due to President Roosevelt who stopped the coinage of Gold..
