Ducats
Ducats go back as far as 1284 to Venice in Italy
( the Ducat was known then as the Zecchino and featured the Doge)
Because of the strength of Venice as a trading Port the Ducat rapidly became the standard coin of Europe.
Various values of Ducat were minted (single, multiple ducats and fractional ducats by a number of countries.)

This remained a popular coin until 1857 - including a silver ducat which was quite popular.
(Silver ducats are in fact still made by the Royal Dutch Mint)
Gold Dutch Ducats were a popular and standard currency - so much so that they were widely counterfeighted at the time.
Ducats were minted in many countries ( at leaset 26 European Mints made them) from as far West as Spain to the East in Russia.
A number of national mints still produce ducats in gold as bullion coins and these can sometimes be seen on sale in banks Europewide.
These are made from Original dies but are definitely modern !
